Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a better understanding of mental and emotional well-being through various activities that promote self-awareness, coping strategies, and interpersonal communication skills. This unit study will integrate reading, spelling, American Sign Language (ASL), home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense, making learning both engaging and practical.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and writing utensils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Cooking ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., a healthy snack)
  • ASL resources (videos or online tutorials)
  • Printed articles on mental health topics
  • Art supplies for creative expression (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Timer for mindfulness activity

Activities

  1. Mindfulness Moment:

    Start the lesson with a 5-minute mindfulness exercise. Jordan can sit quietly, focus on breathing, and observe thoughts without judgment. This will help set a calm tone for the lesson.

  2. Reading and Discussion:

    Jordan will read a short article on mental health. After reading, discuss the key points and how they relate to personal experiences. This will enhance reading comprehension and critical thinking.

  3. ASL Vocabulary:

    Learn and practice ASL signs related to emotions (happy, sad, angry, etc.). Jordan can then create a mini-presentation using these signs to express different feelings.

  4. Healthy Cooking:

    Prepare a simple, healthy snack together. Discuss the importance of nutrition for mental well-being while practicing basic cooking skills.

    Jordan can draw or create a collage that represents their feelings or thoughts about mental health. This activity promotes self-expression and emotional awareness.

    Engage in a logic puzzle or brain teaser that encourages critical thinking skills. Discuss the importance of problem-solving in everyday life.
