Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of Internet safety, including how to protect personal information, recognize online threats, and apply critical thinking skills to evaluate online content. This knowledge will empower Jordan to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet with Internet
  • Printed resources on Internet safety (articles, guides)
  • Video clips on Internet safety (YouTube or educational sites)
  • Basic cooking ingredients for a home ec activity

Before the lesson, ensure that you have access to the necessary online resources and that the student is comfortable using the computer or tablet for research and activities.

Activities

  • Reading and Discussion:

Jordan will read an article about Internet safety and summarize the key points. After reading, have a discussion about what was learned and how it applies to real-life situations.

  • Spelling Challenge:

Create a list of Internet safety-related terms (e.g., phishing, malware, privacy). Jordan will learn to spell these words and use them in sentences to reinforce understanding.

  • ASL Vocabulary:

Learn and practice American Sign Language (ASL) signs for key Internet safety terms. This can include signs for "safe," "online," "friend," and "danger." This activity promotes inclusivity and communication skills.

  • Cooking and Safety:

Prepare a simple recipe while discussing the importance of safety in both cooking and online activities. Discuss how following safety guidelines can prevent accidents and dangers.

  • Critical Thinking Scenarios:

Present Jordan with various online scenarios (e.g., receiving a suspicious email, encountering cyberbullying). Have Jordan analyze the situation and decide on the best course of action.
