Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of service animal training, including the skills required for both the animals and the handlers. Jordan will also improve in reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, and critical thinking through engaging activities related to service animals.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printable ASL flashcards (can be created as needed)
  • Basic cooking ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., dog treats)
  • List of service animals and their roles
  • Logic puzzles or critical thinking games (can be created or printed)

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan is familiar with the concept of service animals and their importance in society. Prepare any materials that need to be printed or set up in advance.

Activities

  1. Reading and Research:

Jordan will read articles or watch videos about different types of service animals, their training processes, and the laws surrounding their use. Afterward, Jordan will summarize the key points in their own words.

  2. ASL Vocabulary:

Jordan will learn and practice basic ASL signs related to service animals, such as "dog," "help," and "trainer." Jordan can create flashcards for each sign and practice them with a family member.

  3. Cooking Activity:

Jordan will make homemade dog treats to understand the dietary needs of service animals. This activity will teach about nutrition and responsibility in caring for animals.

  4. Logic Puzzles:

Jordan will solve logic puzzles that involve scenarios with service animals. This will enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  5. Life Skills Discussion:

Jordan will engage in a discussion about the responsibilities of owning a service animal, including daily care, training, and the emotional bond between the animal and the handler.
