Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a deeper understanding of city living through various subjects, including reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense. Jordan will be able to articulate what makes city living unique and how to navigate it effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes and reflections
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Cooking utensils and ingredients for a simple recipe
  • ASL resources (video tutorials or apps)
  • Books or articles about city living (can be found online)

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan has a quiet space to work and all materials are ready for use. Familiarize yourself with basic ASL signs related to city living.

Activities

  • City Living Research Project:

Jordan will research different aspects of city living, such as public transportation, local culture, and community services. This will involve reading articles and summarizing key points in their notebook.

  • ASL Practice:

Using online resources, Jordan will learn and practice basic ASL signs related to city life (e.g., "bus," "store," "help"). They can create a mini-presentation to showcase what they learned.

  • Cooking a City-Inspired Meal:

Jordan will choose a simple recipe that represents a popular dish from a city they researched. They will prepare the meal, focusing on life skills such as measuring ingredients and following instructions.

  • Critical Thinking Challenge:

Jordan will engage in a scenario-based activity where they must solve common city living problems, such as finding their way home or budgeting for groceries. This will encourage logical reasoning and practical application of life skills.

  • Spelling Bee on City Terms:

Jordan will create a list of city-related vocabulary words and hold a spelling bee, either with themselves or with a family member. This will reinforce spelling and vocabulary skills.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think are the biggest differences between living in a city versus a rural area?"
  • "How can learning ASL help you communicate better in a diverse city?"
  • "Why is it important to know how to cook for yourself, especially in a city with many food options?"
  • "Can you think of a time when critical thinking helped you solve a problem? How might that apply to city living?"
  • "What are some common sense tips you think everyone should know when navigating a busy city?"
