Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of dermatology, including skin structure, common skin conditions, and basic skincare routines. Additionally, Jordan will enhance skills in reading, spelling, American Sign Language (ASL), home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pen for notes and reflections
- Access to a mirror for skin observation
- Basic kitchen supplies for skincare product creation (e.g., olive oil, sugar, essential oils)
- ASL alphabet chart
- Reading material on dermatology (provided by the teacher)
- Craft supplies for creating a skincare routine poster (colored paper, markers, etc.)
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic dermatology terms and concepts. Prepare any necessary ingredients for the skincare product activity.
Activities
- Skin Observation and Reflection:
Jordan will observe their own skin in the mirror, noting any unique features, such as freckles, moles, or other characteristics. They will then write a short reflection on what they see and how it relates to dermatology.
- ASL Vocabulary for Dermatology:
Jordan will learn and practice basic ASL signs related to dermatology, such as "skin," "cream," "sun," and "doctor." This will help them communicate important dermatology concepts in a new way.
- Homemade Skincare Product:
Using simple ingredients, Jordan will create a basic sugar scrub or moisturizer. They will document the process and discuss the benefits of each ingredient for skin health.
- Skincare Routine Poster:
Jordan will design a colorful poster outlining a daily skincare routine, including steps like cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. They will present this poster to their family or peers.
- Critical Thinking Discussion:
Jordan will engage in a discussion about the importance of skin health and common misconceptions about skincare. They will analyze different viewpoints and come up with logical arguments to support their opinions.
