Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) through various subjects, enhancing his reading, spelling, critical thinking, and life skills while exploring the implications and applications of AI in everyday life.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pens for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printed resources or articles about AI (can be found online)
  • Recipe ingredients for the home economics activity
  • Flashcards for ASL vocabulary related to technology

Before starting, ensure that Jordan has a basic understanding of AI concepts and is familiar with the topics to be discussed. Prepare the ingredients for the home economics activity in advance.

Activities

  • Reading and Discussion: Jordan will read an article about AI and its impact on society. After reading, he will summarize the key points and discuss them with you, focusing on how AI affects daily life.
  • Spelling Bee: Create a spelling list of AI-related terms (like "algorithm," "machine learning," "data," etc.). Jordan will practice spelling these words and use them in sentences.
  • ASL Vocabulary: Teach Jordan basic ASL signs related to technology and AI. Create flashcards for practice, and have him demonstrate the signs.
  • AI Recipe Creation: In home economics, Jordan will create a simple recipe using AI concepts (like "algorithm" for step-by-step instructions). He'll prepare the dish and reflect on how following a recipe is similar to programming an AI.
  • Critical Thinking Challenge: Present Jordan with a scenario where AI is used (like self-driving cars). He will analyze the pros and cons, encouraging logical reasoning and common sense.

Talking Points

  • "AI is all around us, from the recommendations we see on Netflix to the voice assistants we talk to. Can you think of other examples?"
  • "Spelling and understanding these AI-related terms will help you communicate better about technology. Why do you think it's important to know these words?"
  • "Learning ASL for technology can help you connect with more people. How do you think this skill can be useful in the future?"
  • "Cooking a recipe is like programming. What steps do you think are essential to create a successful dish?"
  • "When we think about the impact of AI, it's vital to consider both the benefits and the potential risks. What are some things you think we should be careful about?"
