Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of bullying, its impacts, and strategies to prevent it. Through engaging activities, Jordan will enhance his reading, spelling, ASL skills, and critical thinking while developing life skills that promote empathy and resilience.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for journaling and notes
  • Printed articles or stories about bullying (can be found online)
  • Access to a mirror for practicing ASL
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative projects
  • Access to a computer for research and presentations
  • Timer for activities

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan is comfortable discussing the topic of bullying and understands the importance of empathy and kindness.

Activities

  • Reading & Discussion: Jordan will read an article about the effects of bullying. After reading, he will summarize the key points and discuss them with you. This will help him practice reading comprehension and critical thinking.
  • ASL Practice: Jordan will learn and practice ASL signs for words related to bullying (e.g., "stop," "help," "friend"). He can create a short video demonstrating these signs and share it with friends or family.
  • Creative Expression: Using art supplies, Jordan will create a poster that promotes anti-bullying messages. This could include slogans, drawings, or quotes that inspire kindness and acceptance.
  • Role-Playing Scenarios: Together, you will role-play different bullying scenarios. Jordan can practice responding to bullying as both the victim and the bystander, discussing appropriate responses and how to support others.
  • Life Skills Reflection: Jordan will write a journal entry reflecting on a time when he witnessed bullying. He will explore his feelings and discuss what he could have done differently. This will enhance his self-awareness and empathy.
