Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of the importance of collecting and preserving family history through VA pay unit study. This will include developing skills in reading, spelling, American Sign Language (ASL), life skills, critical thinking, logic, common sense, and health. Jordan will also create a personal collection project that reflects the family's history and significance.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook for journaling and note-taking
  • Pens and colored markers
  • Access to family records or VA pay documents (if available)
  • Internet access for research
  • ASL resources (videos or apps for learning signs)
  • Art supplies for creative projects (construction paper, glue, scissors)
  • Healthy snacks for a refreshment break

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with any available family records and VA pay documents. Prepare ASL resources in advance to ensure smooth learning.

Activities

  • Family History Research: Jordan will explore family history by researching any available VA pay records. This can involve discussing with parents or relatives about their experiences and collecting stories that are meaningful.

  • Spelling Bee with Family Terms: Create a list of relevant terms related to family history and VA benefits. Jordan will practice spelling these words and use them in sentences.

  • ASL Learning Session: Jordan will learn basic signs related to family and history. This can include signs for "family," "history," "love," and "collect." A fun practice session can be held where Jordan signs the words to a family member.

  • Creative Scrapbook Project: Using the collected information, Jordan will create a scrapbook page or digital presentation that showcases the family's history, including pictures, stories, and VA pay details.

  • Critical Thinking Discussion: Engage in a discussion about the importance of preserving family history. What does it mean to Jordan? How can understanding the past help in making decisions today?
