Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction using Lego bricks, explore simple science concepts like balance and weight, and enhance their English vocabulary by describing their creations and the math they used.

Materials and Prep

  • Assorted Lego bricks in various shapes and sizes
  • Paper and pencil for writing down math problems and observations
  • Measuring scale (if available) or a balance made with Lego bricks

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to know how to count and recognize basic math symbols (+, -). Familiarize the student with some simple science terms like "balance," "weight," and "measure." Encourage creativity with Lego building!

Activities

  • Lego Addition and Subtraction:

Have the student build two towers with Lego bricks. Ask them to count the number of bricks in each tower. Then, guide them to write a simple addition problem (e.g., 3 bricks + 2 bricks = ?) and find the total by combining the towers. For subtraction, remove some bricks from one tower and ask how many are left.

  • Lego Weight Experiment:

Using the Lego bricks, create a balance scale. Have the student place different Lego structures on each side to see which side is heavier. Discuss how we can measure weight and what it means for something to be balanced.

  • Lego Storytelling:

After building a structure, ask the student to describe what they built using new vocabulary words. Encourage them to create a short story about their Lego creation, incorporating math concepts they used (like how many bricks or what shapes they included).

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many bricks are in your tower? Let’s write it down!"
  • "If we take away 2 bricks from this tower, how many do we have left? Let’s find out!"
  • "What happens when we put more bricks on one side of the scale? Does it tip over?"
  • "What do you think makes something balanced? Let’s try to find out with our Lego balance!"
  • "Can you tell me a story about what you built? What do you call this creation?"
  • "How many different shapes can you find in your Lego structure? Let’s name them!"
  • "Why do you think measuring weight is important? What can we use it for?"
