Objective

By the end of this lesson, Zac will learn how to combine art, math, and science by collecting natural items during a nature hike and using them to create beautiful window sun catchers. This project will help him understand the properties of light, patterns, and the beauty of nature.

Materials and Prep

  • Clear contact paper
  • Items collected from nature (leaves, flowers, twigs, etc.)
  • Scissors (if needed to cut the contact paper)
  • Notebook and pencil for observations and sketches

Before starting the lesson, ensure that Zac has a safe area to hike and collect items. Discuss the importance of respecting nature by only collecting items that are already on the ground and not harming living plants.

Activities

  1. Nature Hike: Take a walk in a nearby park or nature trail. Encourage Zac to observe the environment and collect interesting natural items like leaves, flowers, and small twigs. Remind him to think about different colors, shapes, and textures.

  2. Observation and Sketching: Once back home, have Zac sit down and sketch some of the items he collected. He can note their colors and shapes, which will help him decide how to arrange them later in the sun catcher.

  3. Creating the Sun Catcher: Using the clear contact paper, Zac will lay out his collected items in a design of his choice. He can stick them onto the contact paper and then cover them with another piece of contact paper to seal them in. This will create a beautiful sun catcher that can be hung in a window.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think light is important in nature?" - Discuss how light affects plants and animals and how it can change the way we see colors.
  • "What patterns do you notice in the leaves or flowers you collected?" - Encourage Zac to think about symmetry, shapes, and designs found in nature.
  • "How do you think the sun catcher will look when the sunlight shines through it?" - Talk about how light interacts with different materials and colors.
  • "Can you measure the size of your sun catcher? What shapes are you using?" - Introduce basic math concepts by measuring the contact paper and discussing geometric shapes.
  • "What other items do you think could be used for sun catchers?" - Encourage creativity and exploration of other natural elements that can be used in future projects.
