Objective
By the end of this lesson, Sammy will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts using fun, interactive activities. Sammy will also learn how to apply these concepts to solve simple math problems in a playful manner.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for writing down problems and solutions
- Colorful markers or crayons for drawing
- A timer (can be a phone or a stopwatch) for timed activities
- Some small toys or objects (like blocks or buttons) for counting
Before the lesson, ensure that Sammy is comfortable with basic counting and is familiar with addition and subtraction. Review simple math facts if needed.
Activities
-
Addition Scavenger Hunt: Sammy will go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find a specific number of items (for example, 5 toys). For each item found, Sammy will write down the total number of items collected so far using addition.
-
Subtraction Storytime: Sammy will create a short story involving a character who has a certain number of items (like 10 apples). As the story progresses, Sammy will subtract items based on what happens in the story (e.g., "3 apples were eaten").
-
Math Relay Race: Set up a small obstacle course in the yard or living room. At each station, Sammy will solve a math problem (addition or subtraction) before moving to the next station. Time how fast Sammy can complete the course!
Talking Points
- "What happens when we add two numbers together? Can you think of an example?"
- "When we subtract, what are we doing? Can you show me with your toys?"
- "How can we use our scavenger hunt to practice addition? Let's count together!"
- "In your story, how many apples do we have at the start? How many are left after we eat some?"
- "What do you think is more fun: adding or subtracting? Why?"
- "How did you feel when you solved the math problems during the relay race? Was it exciting?"
- "Can you think of a time when you used math in real life? Like at the store?"
- "Math is like a puzzle! How do you feel when you solve a math puzzle?"
