Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to teach their dog at least three fun tricks. They will learn effective training techniques, understand the importance of positive reinforcement, and develop a deeper bond with their pet through interactive play.

Materials and Prep

  • A dog (the student's pet)
  • Dog treats (small and soft for easy chewing)
  • A quiet space free from distractions
  • Patience and enthusiasm!

Before the lesson, ensure that the dog is well-rested and not overly excited. A calm environment will help both the student and the dog focus on learning the tricks.

Activities

  • Warm-Up: Basic Commands

Start the lesson by practicing basic commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come." This will help establish a foundation for more complex tricks and reinforce the dog's understanding of commands.

  • Teaching a New Trick: Roll Over

Guide the student to teach their dog to roll over. Use treats to lure the dog into a lying position, then gently encourage them to roll by moving the treat in a circular motion. Celebrate small successes to keep the dog motivated!

  • Practice: Shake Hands

Next, teach the dog to shake hands. Have the dog sit, then gently lift one of their paws while saying "shake." Reward the dog with treats and praise every time they lift their paw. Repeat until the dog understands the command.

  • Fun Trick: Play Dead

Finally, teach the dog to play dead. Start with the dog in a lying position, then use a treat to guide them onto their side while saying "bang!" or "play dead." Reward them for staying in position, gradually reducing the need for treats.

Talking Points

  • "Dogs learn best through positive reinforcement, so always reward your dog for good behavior!"
  • "Patience is key! If your dog doesn't get it right away, take a break and try again later."
  • "Make training sessions short and fun to keep your dog's attention and enthusiasm high!"
  • "Remember to use a consistent command for each trick, so your dog knows what to expect."
  • "Training is not just about teaching tricks; it's also about building a strong bond with your dog."
