Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fiona will be able to effectively plan and write an essay ranging from 500 to 1000 words. She will learn how to brainstorm ideas, create a mind map, develop an outline, and draft an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Additionally, she will understand the differences between fiction and nonfiction writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or lined paper
  • Pens or pencils
  • Markers for mind mapping
  • Timer (optional for timed activities)
  • Quiet space for writing

Before the lesson, ensure that Fiona has a comfortable writing environment and is ready to engage in creative thinking. Discuss her interests to help guide her essay topic selection.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session: Start with a free-write exercise where Fiona writes down any topics that interest her for 5-10 minutes. This will help her generate ideas for her essay.
  • Mind Mapping: Using markers and paper, Fiona will create a mind map of her chosen topic. She can branch out with subtopics, arguments, and examples. This visual representation will help her organize her thoughts.
  • Outline Creation: From her mind map, Fiona will develop a structured outline for her essay. This outline will include an introduction, main points for each paragraph, and a conclusion.
  • Drafting the Essay: Using the outline, Fiona will write a rough draft of her essay. Encourage her to focus on getting her ideas down without worrying about perfection at this stage.
  • Discussion on Fiction vs. Nonfiction: Engage in a conversation about the differences between fiction and nonfiction writing. Ask Fiona to think of examples of each and discuss why they are important.
