Objective

By the end of this lesson, Finlay will learn about the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, and the first Thanksgiving through fun activities that combine art, English, history, math, science, and social studies. He will create a mini Mayflower, write a short story about the Pilgrims, and understand the importance of Thanksgiving.

Materials and Prep

• Paper for drawing and writing
• Crayons or colored pencils
• Scissors (with adult supervision)
• Glue or tape
• A small box or container to represent the Mayflower
• Small items (like buttons or stones) to represent Pilgrim supplies

Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a comfortable workspace ready and explain to Finlay that he will be learning about a special time in American history.

Activities

• Mini Mayflower Craft:

  Finlay will create a mini version of the Mayflower using the small box. He can decorate it with crayons and add small items to represent the supplies the Pilgrims brought with them. This will help him visualize the ship that carried the Pilgrims to America.

• Story Time:

  Finlay will write a short story about the Pilgrims' journey on the Mayflower and their first Thanksgiving. He can illustrate his story with drawings of the ship, the Pilgrims, and the feast. This will enhance his writing and storytelling skills.

• Thanksgiving Math:

  Using the small items he collected, Finlay can practice counting and simple addition by grouping the items into sets. For example, he can count how many buttons he has and then add a few more to see how many there are in total.

• Science Exploration:

  Finlay can explore the types of food that were eaten during the first Thanksgiving. He can draw pictures of these foods and learn about why they were important. This will introduce him to the science of food and nutrition.

• Discussion on Gratitude:

  Finlay will discuss what he is thankful for and why. This can be written down or illustrated. This activity will help him understand the spirit of Thanksgiving and the importance of gratitude.
