Objective

By the end of this lesson, Wolves will understand the basic concepts of the solar system, including the names of the planets, their order from the sun, and some interesting facts about moons and planets.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Access to a quiet space for discussion and activities

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful to know the order of the planets from the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Also, prepare some fun facts about each planet and its moons!

Activities

  • Planet Drawing:

Wolves will draw each planet in the solar system, using different colors to represent their unique features. For example, they can use red for Mars and blue for Earth!

  • Moon Facts:

Wolves will choose one moon from the solar system and write down three interesting facts about it. This could be about its size, what it’s made of, or any missions that have been sent there.

  • Solar System Model:

Wolves will create a simple model of the solar system using their drawings. They can arrange the planets in the correct order from the sun and label each one.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that the sun is a star? It's the center of our solar system!"
  • "Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, and it's super hot!"
  • "Earth is the only planet we know has life on it. Isn't that special?"
  • "Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. It's like a giant ball of gas!"
  • "Saturn has beautiful rings made of ice and rock. They look like a giant hula hoop!"
  • "Some moons are really big, like Ganymede, which is bigger than the planet Mercury!"
  • "Did you know that Neptune is the windiest planet? Its winds can blow super fast!"
