Objective

By the end of this lesson, Wolves will have a better understanding of the solar system, including the different planets, their moons, and how they all interact. Wolves will be able to identify at least three planets and their unique features, as well as explain what makes our solar system special!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • A large piece of cardboard or a flat surface for a model
  • Imagination!

Before the lesson, make sure to find a quiet space where Wolves can focus and have fun creating. It’s also helpful to have a little background knowledge about the solar system, so you can answer any questions that may come up!

Activities

  • Planet Drawing

Wolves will choose three different planets and draw them on paper. Encourage creativity by suggesting they include details like rings for Saturn or storms for Jupiter!

  • Moon Phases Craft

Using paper and colored pencils, Wolves can create a series of drawings showing the different phases of the moon. This will help them understand how the moon changes shape throughout the month.

  • Solar System Model

Using the cardboard, Wolves can create a 3D model of the solar system. They can position the planets in order from the sun and decorate it with colors and textures that represent each planet!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that our solar system has eight planets? Can you name any of them?"
  • "Each planet is unique! For example, Jupiter is the biggest planet and has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot!"
  • "The moon is not just one shape; it changes every night! Have you ever noticed it looking different?"
  • "The planets orbit around the sun, which is like a giant ball of fire in the center of our solar system!"
  • "Earth is special because it’s the only planet we know of that has life! What do you love about living on Earth?"
  • "Some planets have rings! Can you guess which planet has beautiful rings? That’s right, it’s Saturn!"
  • "Did you know that Mars is often called the 'Red Planet'? It’s because of the iron oxide on its surface!"
  • "What do you think it would be like to visit another planet? Would you want to go to the moon or Mars?"
