Objective

By the end of this lesson, Wolves will have a better understanding of the solar system, including the planets and their moons. Wolves will be able to identify at least three planets, describe their unique features, and explain the concept of orbits.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A large sheet of paper or poster board
  • A timer or stopwatch
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
  • Knowledge about the planets and their moons (basic facts)

Activities

  • Planet Drawing:

Wolves will choose their favorite planet and create a colorful drawing of it. They can include details like rings, moons, and any interesting features they know about.

  • Solar System Model:

Using the large sheet of paper, Wolves will create a model of the solar system. They will draw the sun and the planets in order from the sun, making sure to label each planet with its name and a fun fact.

  • Planetary Race:

Set a timer and have a race to see how many facts Wolves can write down about different planets in one minute. This will help them remember important details while having fun!

  • Moon Exploration:

Wolves will research one moon of their choice and prepare a short presentation about it. They can include where it is located, what it looks like, and any interesting facts.

Talking Points

  • "The solar system is like a big family, with the sun as the parent and all the planets as its children."

  • "Moons are like little friends that circle around planets. Some planets have many moons, while others have none!"
  • "The planets travel around the sun in paths called orbits. It's like a race track in space!"
  • "Earth is special because it has the right conditions for life. It's the only planet we know that has living things!"
  • "Did you know that Saturn has beautiful rings made of ice and rock? They make it look like a giant hula hoop!"
  • "Exploring the solar system helps us learn more about our own planet and how to take care of it."
