Objective

By the end of this lesson, L will demonstrate an understanding of key components of the English curriculum, including reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar. L will create a fun one-page assessment that showcases their skills and knowledge in English.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank A4 paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • Access to a quiet space for reading and writing

Before the lesson, ensure L is familiar with basic grammar rules, sentence structure, and has read a short story or article that can be discussed later in the activities.

Activities

  • Story Time & Discussion:

Start with a short story or article. After reading, discuss the main ideas, characters, and setting. Ask L to share their favorite part and why they liked it.

  • Creative Writing:

Encourage L to write a short story or poem based on a prompt. For example, "What would happen if animals could talk?" This will help develop their creative thinking and writing skills.

  • Grammar Challenge:

Prepare a few sentences with intentional grammar mistakes. Have L identify and correct the errors, explaining why the corrections are necessary.

  • Artistic Assessment:

On the blank A4 paper, L will create a one-page assessment that includes a summary of the story read, their creative writing piece, and a section showcasing their grammar corrections. Encourage them to decorate it with drawings related to their story.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think the main idea of the story is?"
  • "Can you tell me about the characters? What makes them interesting?"
  • "Why did you choose that particular prompt for your creative writing?"
  • "What are some important parts of a story? Can you name them?"
  • "How do you think we can make sentences clearer?"
  • "What are some common grammar mistakes you notice when you read?"
  • "How does adding details to your writing make it more fun?"
  • "What did you enjoy most about creating your one-page assessment?"
  • "How can we use colors and drawings to make our work more engaging?"
  • "What is one thing you learned today that you didn’t know before?"
