Objective
By the end of this lesson, Olga will be able to understand and apply basic addition and subtraction concepts through fun activities, enhancing her mathematical skills and confidence.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- A timer (or a stopwatch on a phone)
- Some small objects (like buttons, coins, or toys) for counting
- A comfortable workspace
Before the lesson, ensure that Olga is familiar with basic numbers and can count up to at least 20. Prepare a fun and relaxed atmosphere to make learning enjoyable!
Activities
- Counting Treasure Hunt
Hide small objects around the room. Ask Olga to find a certain number of objects (e.g., "Can you find 5 buttons?"). Once she collects them, she can add them up or subtract them from a larger number.
- Math Relay Race
Set up a small course with math problems at each station (like "2 + 3" or "5 - 1"). Olga must solve the problem before moving to the next station. Time her and see how fast she can complete it!
- Story Problems
Create simple story problems together using her favorite characters or toys. For example, "If you have 3 dolls and you get 2 more, how many do you have now?"
- Math Art
Use her drawing skills to create a picture that represents a math problem. For instance, she can draw 4 apples and then cross out 1 to show subtraction.
Talking Points
- "Math is like a puzzle! Each number is a piece that helps us figure things out."
- "When we add, we are putting things together. Can you think of something you would add?"
- "Subtracting is like taking away. If you have 5 candies and eat 2, how many do you have left?"
- "Counting is super important! Let's count the objects we find together."
- "Story problems are fun because they tell a little tale! What story can we make with our math today?"
- "Art and math can work together! Let’s make a picture that shows a math problem."
- "Great job today! Remember, practicing math can be fun and helps us in everyday life!"
