Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kat will understand the basics of planting fresh vegetables and fruits, including how to prepare the soil, plant seeds, and care for her garden. She will also learn about the importance of plants in our environment and how they grow.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds of her choice (e.g., tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, or strawberries)
  • Small pots or containers (can be recycled containers like yogurt cups)
  • Soil (can be gathered from the garden or purchased)
  • Water
  • Sunlight (a sunny spot for the plants)

Before starting, make sure to choose vegetable and fruit seeds that are suitable for the current season and check if the pots have holes for drainage. Explain to Kat the importance of sunlight and water for plant growth.

Activities

  • Seed Exploration:

Kat will examine the seeds closely, comparing their shapes and sizes. She can draw pictures of the seeds and write down their names. This helps her understand the diversity of plants.

  • Planting Seeds:

Kat will fill her pots with soil, make small holes for the seeds, and plant them. She can choose how many seeds to plant in each pot and learn about spacing. This will teach her about the planting process.

  • Watering and Care:

After planting, Kat will water her seeds gently. She can create a watering schedule to remember when to water her plants, learning about the importance of consistent care.

  • Garden Journal:

Kat will start a garden journal where she can write down her observations, such as how much the plants grow each week. This will help her track the progress of her garden.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that plants are like superheroes? They help clean the air and give us food!"
  • "What do you think happens to a seed when we plant it in the soil?"
  • "Why do you think plants need sunlight? Let’s find out together!"
  • "How do you feel when you see something grow? Plants grow slowly, but with care, they can become big!"
  • "What do you think will happen if we forget to water our plants?"
  • "Can you name some fruits and vegetables that we eat? What do you like the most?"
  • "Let’s make a plan for our garden. What do you want to plant first?"
  • "Remember, every time we water our plants, we are helping them grow strong and healthy!"
