Objective

By the end of this lesson, Tanner will have a better understanding of the importance of nutrition, physical activity, and mental well-being. He will learn how to make healthier choices and understand how these choices affect his overall health.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a kitchen for cooking activities
  • Space for physical activities (indoor or outdoor)
  • Internet access for research (optional)
  • Basic cooking ingredients (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.)
  • Access to a timer or stopwatch

Before the lesson, ensure that Tanner understands the basics of nutrition and has a general idea of what healthy food choices are. It might be helpful to discuss any dietary restrictions or preferences he has.

Activities

  • Nutritional Scavenger Hunt:

Tanner will search the kitchen for different food items and categorize them into fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. This will help him understand the variety of foods and their nutritional benefits.

  • Healthy Recipe Creation:

Tanner will choose a few healthy ingredients from the scavenger hunt and create a simple recipe. He will write down the recipe and explain why he chose those ingredients, focusing on their health benefits.

  • Physical Activity Challenge:

Tanner will set a timer for 10 minutes and perform as many physical activities as he can, such as jumping jacks, squats, or running in place. Afterward, he will reflect on how he feels and the importance of staying active.

  • Mental Health Minute:

Tanner will take five minutes to practice mindfulness or meditation. He can listen to calming music or sit quietly and focus on his breathing. Afterward, he will discuss how it felt and why mental health is just as important as physical health.
