Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore and understand the historical significance of famous paintings and artists, and create their own painting inspired by a historical event or time period.

Materials and Prep

  • Canvas or sturdy paper
  • Paints (acrylic or watercolor)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water container
  • Pencil
  • Palette or disposable plates
  • Reference materials about famous paintings and artists
  • Internet access (optional)

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of painting techniques and be familiar with famous paintings and artists.

Activities

  1. Introduce the student to famous paintings and artists from different time periods in history. Show them examples and discuss the historical significance of each artwork.
  2. Encourage the student to choose a historical event or time period that interests them.
  3. Guide the student to research more about their chosen historical event or time period, focusing on the art and paintings created during that time.
  4. Ask the student to sketch a composition inspired by their chosen historical event or time period. They should consider the colors, style, and subject matter that represent the era.
  5. Assist the student in transferring their sketch onto the canvas or paper.
  6. Show the student different painting techniques and encourage them to experiment with colors and brushstrokes to bring their composition to life.
  7. Allow the student to explore and express their creativity while painting their artwork.
  8. Once the painting is complete, have a discussion with the student about their artistic choices and how it relates to the historical event or time period they chose.
