Objective

By the end of this lesson, Tanner will have a solid understanding of basic library skills, including how to locate books, use the library catalog, and understand different genres of literature. Tanner will also learn how to evaluate sources for reliability and relevance, which are essential skills for research and reading comprehension.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a library catalog (online or physical)
  • List of book genres (fiction, non-fiction, mystery, fantasy, etc.)
  • Sample books or articles for evaluation
  • Printouts of library organization charts (Dewey Decimal System, etc.)

Before the lesson, ensure that Tanner has access to a library, whether it’s a local public library or an online library catalog. Familiarize yourself with the library's layout if it’s a physical location.

Activities

  • Library Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt where Tanner has to find specific books or materials in the library. Provide clues related to genres or authors to make it exciting. This will help Tanner learn how to navigate the library effectively.

  • Genre Exploration: Have Tanner choose three different genres and find a book from each. After selecting the books, Tanner will write a brief summary of each and explain why they chose them. This activity promotes exploration of different types of literature.

  • Source Evaluation: Present Tanner with different articles or book excerpts. Ask Tanner to evaluate their reliability and relevance using a simple checklist. This will help Tanner develop critical thinking skills when assessing information.

  • Library Catalog Challenge: Challenge Tanner to locate a specific book using the library catalog within a set time limit. Discuss the steps taken and the importance of using the catalog effectively. This will enhance Tanner's research skills.
