Objective

By the end of this lesson, Tanner will understand the essential highway safety and traffic regulations, specifically focusing on bicycle safety. He will learn how to ride safely, recognize important traffic signs, and understand the rules that help keep cyclists safe on the road.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a safe outdoor area for practical activities
  • Printed images of traffic signs (can be drawn if printing is not possible)
  • Bike helmet (for safety during activities)
  • Bicycle (for practical riding activities)

Activities

  • Traffic Sign Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt using printed images of various traffic signs. Tanner will search for these signs in the neighborhood or on a bike route. This activity will help him recognize important signs that affect cyclists.

  • Bicycle Safety Checklist: Tanner will create a checklist of safety measures to take before riding a bike. This includes checking the brakes, tires, and wearing a helmet. He can then use the checklist during a practical riding session.

  • Role Play Traffic Scenarios: Set up a mock traffic scenario where Tanner can practice how to navigate through intersections and obey traffic signals while riding his bike. This can be done using chalk to draw roads and signs on the pavement.

  • Bicycle Safety Pledge: Tanner will write a personal pledge about how he will practice bicycle safety. He can decorate it and hang it somewhere visible as a reminder of his commitment to safe riding.

Talking Points

  • "Always wear a helmet when riding your bike. It’s like putting on armor to protect your head!"
  • "Look for and obey traffic signs. They are there to keep you safe and help everyone know the rules of the road!"
  • "Use hand signals to communicate with drivers. It’s a way to say, 'I’m turning left!' or 'I’m stopping!' without words!"
  • "Stay visible! Wear bright colors and use lights if riding at night. You want drivers to see you!"
  • "Always ride in the same direction as traffic. This helps everyone stay aware of where you are going!"
  • "Watch for parked cars and be careful of doors opening. You don’t want to be surprised!"
  • "Practice stopping at intersections. It’s important to look both ways before crossing!"
  • "Remember to keep both hands on the handlebars, unless you’re signaling. Balance is key!"
  • "Know the rules of the road. If you follow them, you’ll be a safer cyclist!"
  • "Encourage your friends to ride safely too! Safety is better when everyone is on board!"
