Objective
By the end of this lesson, Nora will understand the importance of respecting other children's personal space and autonomy. She will learn how to recognize when someone needs space and how to ask for permission before getting close to others.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials needed
- Be ready to model respectful behavior and engage in role-playing scenarios
- Prepare a comfortable space for activities where Nora can move around freely
Activities
-
Personal Space Bubble:
Explain to Nora that everyone has a "bubble" around them. Have her stand in a circle while you both take turns stepping closer to see how it feels. Discuss when it feels good and when it feels too close.
-
Respectful Requests:
Practice asking for permission to enter someone's personal space. Role-play situations where Nora can ask, "Can I come closer?" and discuss how it feels to have someone ask before getting close.
-
Feelings Charades:
Act out different feelings (happy, sad, surprised) and have Nora guess the feelings. Discuss how respecting personal space can help others feel safe and happy.
Talking Points
- "Nora, did you know everyone has a special bubble around them? It helps us feel safe!"
- "When we want to get close to someone, it's nice to ask, 'Can I come closer?' How does that make you feel?"
- "If someone looks like they want space, we should give them a little room. How do you think that makes them feel?"
- "When we respect each other's space, we can all play and have fun together! Isn't that great?"
