Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the themes, characters, and musical elements of "Wicked." They will also explore the story's underlying messages and how it relates to the broader context of the original "Wizard of Oz."

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook or journal for notes and reflections
  • A pen or pencil
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Familiarity with the plot of "Wicked" and "The Wizard of Oz" (if not, a brief summary can be provided)

Activities

  • Character Analysis:

Choose two main characters from "Wicked" (Elphaba and Glinda) and create a character profile for each. Include their motivations, relationships, and how they change throughout the story.

  • Theme Exploration:

Identify three major themes in "Wicked" (e.g., friendship, identity, and prejudice) and write a short paragraph on how each theme is represented in the musical.

  • Song Analysis:

Select a favorite song from the musical (like "Defying Gravity" or "For Good") and analyze its lyrics. Discuss what the song conveys about the characters' emotions and the overall narrative.

  • Creative Expression:

Create a short skit or monologue inspired by a scene from "Wicked." This can be performed for family members or recorded as a video.

  • Research Assignment:

Research the background of "Wicked," including its author (Gregory Maguire) and composer (Stephen Schwartz). Present findings in a short written report or presentation.
