Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how English, History, and Science can all connect through storytelling. They will learn to create their own story that includes historical facts and scientific concepts, enhancing their creativity and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A timer (or a phone timer)
  • A story template (can be created on paper with sections for characters, setting, problem, and solution)
  • Knowledge of a historical event (e.g., the moon landing) and a basic scientific concept (e.g., gravity)

Activities

  • Story Brainstorming:

    Start by brainstorming ideas for a story that includes elements from both history and science. For example, what if an astronaut from the moon landing met a dinosaur? The student can write down their ideas and draw illustrations.

  • Character Creation:

    Have the student create characters for their story. They can draw their characters and write a few sentences about each one, explaining who they are and what role they play in the story.

  • Writing the Story:

    Using the story template, the student will write their story. Encourage them to include historical facts and scientific concepts in their narrative. Set a timer for 20 minutes to keep them focused.

  • Story Sharing:

    Once the story is written, the student can share their story with you. They can read it out loud or perform it as a short play, using their drawings as props.

  • "What do you think makes a good story? Is it the characters, the setting, or the problem?"
  • "Can you think of a historical event that we could include in our story? What happened during that time?"
  • "How does gravity work? Why is it important for our astronaut character?"
  • "What kind of adventure do you want your characters to go on? Will they solve a problem or learn something new?"
  • "How can we combine our knowledge of history and science to make our story more interesting?"
  • "What do you think will happen next in your story? Can you predict the ending?"
  • "Why is storytelling important? How can it help us remember facts about history and science?"
