Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different plants and animals in their outdoor environment, count and categorize them, and understand the basic needs of living things.

Materials and Prep

  • Curiosity and a sense of adventure!
  • Comfortable outdoor clothing and shoes.
  • A notebook or piece of paper for drawing or writing.
  • A pencil or crayon.
  • A magnifying glass (if available, but not necessary).

Before starting the lesson, make sure to choose a safe outdoor area, like a backyard or park, where the student can explore freely.

Activities

  • Nature Walk:

Take a walk outside and look for different types of plants, flowers, and animals. Encourage the student to point out what they see and ask questions about them.

  • Counting Critters:

While on the walk, count how many different animals you see. This could be birds, insects, or even squirrels. Write down the numbers in the notebook.

  • Plant Detective:

Choose a few plants to observe closely. Use the magnifying glass to look at the leaves, flowers, and stems. Draw a picture of one plant in the notebook.

  • Living Needs:

Discuss what plants and animals need to live. Ask the student to think about what they need to live and compare it to the needs of the plants and animals you saw.

Talking Points

  • "Look at all the colors in the flowers! Can you name some colors you see?"
  • "How many birds can you count? Let's see if we can find more!"
  • "What do you think this plant needs to grow? Does it need water?"
  • "Can you see any insects? What do you think they are doing?"
  • "Just like we need food and water, what do you think animals and plants need to be happy?"
