Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of creating natural incense, including selecting ingredients, blending scents, and packaging their product for a small business. They will also learn about the importance of marketing and branding their incense business.
Materials and Prep
- Natural ingredients for incense (e.g., dried herbs, flowers, resins, woods)
- Mortar and pestle or small bowl and spoon for mixing
- Paper and markers for labeling and branding
- Small containers for packaging the incense
- Access to a safe outdoor area for burning incense
Before the lesson, gather all natural ingredients and ensure the workspace is clean and safe for mixing and burning incense.
Activities
- Ingredient Exploration:
The student will explore different natural ingredients that can be used for incense. They will smell and identify various herbs and flowers, discussing which scents they like best and why.
- Mixing Scents:
Using the mortar and pestle, the student will blend their chosen ingredients to create their unique incense blend. They will experiment with different ratios and combinations to find the perfect scent.
- Branding and Packaging:
The student will design a label for their incense product using paper and markers. They will think about a catchy name and what information to include, like ingredients and scent description.
- Incense Testing:
After creating their incense, the student will have the opportunity to burn a small amount outdoors to test the scent. They will observe how the scent changes as it burns and take notes on their experience.
