Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will have created fun and spooky Halloween decorations using old plastic coffee containers. You will learn how to paint, cut, and draw on the containers to transform them into creative decorations for your home.

Materials and Prep

  • Old plastic coffee containers (clean and empty)
  • Acrylic paint (any colors you like)
  • Paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • Scissors (for cutting the containers)
  • Permanent markers or paint pens
  • Paper towels or old newspapers (for cleanup)
  • Water (for rinsing brushes)

Before starting, make sure you have a clean workspace and wear old clothes or an apron to protect against paint splatters!

Activities

  • Activity 1: Design Your Decoration

Start by brainstorming what kind of Halloween decoration you want to make! Think about ghosts, pumpkins, or spooky monsters. Draw your design on paper first to plan how you will paint and cut the container.

  • Activity 2: Painting the Containers

Once you have your design ready, it’s time to paint! Use your acrylic paints to cover the outside of the coffee container. You can mix colors to create unique shades and add fun patterns!

  • Activity 3: Cutting and Shaping

Carefully use scissors to cut out shapes or features from the container. For example, you can cut out eyes and a mouth for a pumpkin face or create a spooky ghost shape. Always ask for help if you need it!

  • Activity 4: Adding Final Touches

Once your paint is dry, use permanent markers or paint pens to add details like facial features or fun designs. You can even write spooky words like “Boo!” or “Eek!” to make your decoration extra special!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that reusing old containers can help the environment? By making decorations, you're being creative and eco-friendly!"
  • "What colors do you think represent Halloween? Orange and black are popular, but you can use any colors you like!"
  • "When cutting the containers, always be careful and take your time. Safety first!"
  • "Painting can be messy, but that’s part of the fun! Don’t worry if you get a little paint on your hands."
  • "Think about how you want your decoration to look. Do you want it to be scary, funny, or cute?"
  • "You can create a whole Halloween scene with multiple decorations! What other ideas do you have?"
  • "Once you’re done, where do you think you will display your decorations? In your room or outside?"
  • "Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to be creative! Just have fun with it!"
  • "Can you think of other things you can make from recycled materials? This is just the beginning!"
  • "Don’t forget to clean up your workspace when you’re finished. It’s part of being a good artist!"
