Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of storytelling in film and how to create a short film concept. They will learn about character development, setting, and plot structure, and will be able to create their own short film idea based on these elements.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for notes and brainstorming
  • A quiet space for filming or acting out scenes
  • A smartphone or tablet (if available) for recording, but not necessary
  • Basic knowledge of storytelling elements (character, setting, plot)

Activities

  • Story Brainstorming: Begin with a brainstorming session where the student thinks of characters they find interesting. Encourage them to think about what makes these characters unique and what challenges they might face in a story.

  • Setting the Scene: Have the student choose a setting for their film. They can draw it out or describe it in detail. Discuss how the setting can affect the mood and story of the film.

  • Plot Development: Guide the student in creating a simple plot outline. They can use a beginning, middle, and end format. Ask them questions like, "What happens first? What is the problem? How does it get solved?"

  • Mini Film Production: If possible, have the student act out a scene from their story or film it using a smartphone or tablet. Encourage them to think about camera angles and how they want to portray their characters.

Talking Points

  • "What makes a good story? Think about your favorite movies or books. What do you love about the characters?"
  • "The setting is like the background of your story. How does it make you feel? Is it a sunny day at the beach or a spooky night in a haunted house?"
  • "Every story has a problem that needs to be solved. What challenge will your character face?"
  • "How does your character change from the beginning to the end of the story? What do they learn?"
  • "When filming, think about how the camera can show feelings. Can you use close-ups for emotions or wide shots for action?"
