Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of sensory experiences and how they affect our perceptions of the world. The student will engage in hands-on activities that explore the five senses through fun and interactive experiments.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Ice cubes
- Salt
- Sugar
- Various spices (like cinnamon, pepper, etc.)
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- Blindfold (optional)
Before the lesson, gather all the materials listed above. Ensure the student is comfortable with the activities and explain that they will be exploring their senses in a fun way!
Activities
-
Sensory Taste Test:
Prepare small samples of different flavors using sugar, salt, and spices. Blindfold the student and have them taste each sample, guessing what it is. Discuss how the tongue detects different tastes.
-
Ice Cube Experiment:
Using ice cubes, have the student hold one in their hand and describe how it feels as it melts. Discuss how temperature is a part of our sensory experience.
-
Sound Scavenger Hunt:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and listen. Have the student write down or draw the different sounds they hear around them. Discuss how sound can change our mood and perception.
-
Smell Jars:
Fill small containers with different spices or scented items. Have the student smell each one and try to identify them. Discuss how smell is closely linked to memory.
-
Creative Sensory Drawing:
After exploring the senses, have the student create a drawing that represents their favorite sensory experience from the lesson. Encourage them to use colors that reflect their feelings about that experience.
