Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lené will understand the basic principles of physics involved in building and using a slingshot. She will gain hands-on experience in constructing a simple slingshot and learn how to launch objects safely and effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Two sturdy sticks or wooden dowels (for the frame)
  • A strong rubber band (for the launching mechanism)
  • A small round object (like a marble or a small ball, for launching)
  • String or twine (to secure the rubber band)
  • Safety goggles (to protect eyes during launching)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to find a safe outdoor area where Lené can launch her slingshot without any obstructions or people nearby.

Activities

  • Building the Slingshot:

    Lené will gather her materials and follow step-by-step instructions to construct her own slingshot. This activity encourages creativity and problem-solving as she decides how to best assemble the frame and attach the rubber band.

  • Testing the Slingshot:

    Once the slingshot is built, Lené will put on her safety goggles and test her creation by launching the small round object. She can experiment with different angles and strengths to see how far she can launch her object.

  • Science Discussion:

    After testing, Lené will discuss what she observed during her launches. This will help her connect the hands-on experience with the science behind how slingshots work, such as force, tension, and trajectory.
