Objective

By the end of this lesson, Arnia will understand the basic principles of physics involved in building a slingshot, including concepts like tension, force, and projectile motion. She will also have hands-on experience constructing her own slingshot and testing its capabilities.

Materials and Prep

  • A sturdy stick or a branch (for the frame of the slingshot)
  • Elastic material (like a rubber band or stretchy fabric)
  • A small object to launch (like a pebble or a small ball)
  • String (to attach the elastic material)
  • Measuring tape (to measure distance)
  • Notebook and pencil (to record observations)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that all materials are safe to use and that Arnia understands how to handle them properly. Discuss safety measures when launching objects.

Activities

  • Design Your Slingshot:

    Arnia will sketch her own design for a slingshot, considering the size and shape of the frame and how she will attach the elastic material. This will help her think creatively about engineering.

  • Build the Slingshot:

    Using the materials gathered, Arnia will construct her slingshot. She will practice tying knots and attaching the elastic to the frame, learning how to make it sturdy and functional.

  • Test and Measure:

    After building the slingshot, Arnia will conduct tests by launching her small object. She will measure how far it goes and record her results in her notebook. This will help her understand the concept of projectile motion.

  • Reflect and Improve:

    After testing, Arnia will think about what worked well and what could be improved. She can make adjustments to her slingshot design based on her observations.
