Objective
By the end of this lesson, Emil will understand how to create a rainbow using different sugar solutions. He will learn about density, color mixing, and how these concepts come together to form a beautiful display!
Materials and Prep
- Granulated sugar
- Water
- Clear cups or containers (at least 5)
- Food coloring (red, blue, yellow, green, purple, etc.)
- Stirring stick or spoon
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
Before starting, make sure to explain to Emil that we will be creating solutions with different amounts of sugar in water. This will help us see how the solutions can layer to make a rainbow!
Activities
-
Making Sugar Solutions: Emil will create sugar solutions with different concentrations. Start with a simple solution: mix 1 tablespoon of sugar in 1/4 cup of water. Then, increase the sugar for each subsequent solution (e.g., 2 tablespoons, 3 tablespoons, etc.).
-
Color Mixing: Once the sugar solutions are ready, Emil will add different food coloring to each solution. He can experiment with mixing colors, like blue and yellow to make green!
-
Layering the Solutions: Emil will carefully layer the solutions in the clear cups. He can pour the heaviest (most sugar) solution first and then gently add the lighter solutions to create a rainbow effect!
-
Observation and Reflection: After creating the rainbow, Emil will observe the colors and discuss how they mixed. He can write or draw about what he learned from the activity.
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen when we mix different amounts of sugar in water?"
- "Did you know that sugar can change how heavy the water is? That’s why we can layer them!"
- "What colors do you see? Can you mix to make new colors?"
- "Why do you think the heavier solutions stay at the bottom?"
- "How does it feel to create something beautiful with science and art?"
- "What was your favorite part of making the rainbow?"
- "Can you think of other ways we could create colors or layers? Let’s brainstorm!"
