Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and articulate what constitutes their cultural identity, using relevant vocabulary and phrases in the target foreign language. They will also gain a deeper understanding of how culture influences personal identity.

Materials and Prep

  • Visual aids (optional: pictures representing different cultures)
  • Prepared questions for discussion
  • Knowledge of basic vocabulary related to culture and identity in the target language

Activities

  • Cultural Identity Map:

    The student will create a visual map that represents their cultural identity. They can include elements such as language, traditions, food, and values. This map will help them visualize and articulate their identity in the foreign language.

  • Interview a Family Member:

    The student will prepare a set of questions in the foreign language to interview a family member about their cultural background. This activity will encourage them to practice speaking and listening skills while gaining insights into their family's cultural identity.

  • Culture Presentation:

    The student will choose a culture different from their own and prepare a short presentation in the foreign language about its key aspects. This can include language, customs, and significant contributions to society. This activity will enhance their research skills and reinforce vocabulary.

  • Role Play:

    In pairs or solo, the student will role-play a scenario where they introduce themselves and share their cultural identity in the foreign language. They can use their Cultural Identity Map as a reference. This will help them practice conversational skills in a fun and engaging way.
