Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emil will learn how to make a pizza while exploring concepts in art, math, science, and social studies. Emil will create a fun pizza design, measure ingredients, understand the science behind cooking, and learn about the history of pizza.

Materials and Prep

  • Pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
  • Pizza sauce
  • Cheese (mozzarella or any favorite type)
  • Various toppings (pepperoni, vegetables, etc.)
  • Oven (for cooking the pizza)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling pin (if making dough)

Before the lesson, ensure all ingredients are prepared and easy to access. Discuss with Emil the importance of safety when using the oven.

Activities

  1. Art Activity: Design Your Pizza! Emil can draw or create a colorful pizza design on paper. He can choose colors for each ingredient and give his pizza a fun name!

  2. Math Activity: Measuring Ingredients! Emil will measure out the ingredients needed for the pizza using measuring cups and spoons. He can practice counting and adding up the amounts of toppings he wants to use.

  3. Science Activity: Cooking Science! Discuss with Emil how heat changes the dough and cheese as they cook. Emil can observe the changes as the pizza bakes in the oven!

  4. Social Studies Activity: Pizza Around the World! Emil can learn about the history of pizza and how it is enjoyed in different cultures. He can share fun facts about pizza in Italy or other countries.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that pizza started in Italy? It's a special food that many people love!"
  • "When we measure ingredients, we are using math! How many cups of sauce do you think we need?"
  • "As the pizza cooks, the heat makes the dough rise and the cheese melt. Isn’t that cool?"
  • "What toppings do you want to add? Let's count them together!"
  • "Can you think of a fun name for your pizza? How about 'Emil's Super Pizza'?"
  • "Pizza can be made in many ways around the world. What do you think people in other countries put on their pizza?"
  • "Cooking is like a science experiment! What do you think will happen when we put the pizza in the oven?"
