Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a clear understanding of letter writing, how to create envelope art, the purpose of stamps, and the basics of the mail system. They will write a letter to a friend or family member, decorate an envelope, and learn how to send it through the mail.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper for writing letters
  • Envelopes for mailing
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons for envelope art
  • Stamps (if available) or pictures of stamps
  • Access to a mailbox or a plan to visit one

Before the lesson, ensure the student understands basic writing skills and has a concept of what a letter is. Gather materials and prepare a comfortable writing space.

Activities

  • Letter Writing

The student will write a letter to a friend or family member. They will include a greeting, body, and closing. Encourage them to share something interesting or ask questions to engage the recipient.

  • Envelope Art

Once the letter is written, the student will decorate the envelope. They can draw pictures, write the recipient's name in colorful letters, or create designs that reflect the letter's content.

  • Stamp Exploration

Discuss the importance of stamps and how they work. If stamps are available, the student can choose one to put on their envelope. If not, they can create their own stamp design on paper to understand its purpose.

  • Mailing the Letter

Finally, the student will learn how to properly address the envelope and prepare it for mailing. If possible, take a trip to a mailbox to drop it off, or discuss how the mail system works.
