Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emil will have learned how to make a slingshot handle and a keychain using simple tools like a saw, pliers, and wire. He will also understand the basic concepts of art, history, math, science, and social studies related to these activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Wooden branch (for the slingshot handle)
  • Saw (to cut the wood)
  • Pliers (to manipulate the wire)
  • Wire (for the keychain)
  • Sandpaper (optional, for smoothing the wood)
  • Safety goggles (for protection while using the saw)

Before starting, ensure Emil understands how to safely use the saw and pliers. Discuss the importance of safety when working with tools.

Activities

  • Making the Slingshot Handle

Emil will select a suitable branch and use the saw to cut it to the desired length for his slingshot handle. He can remove the bark using his hands or a small knife (with supervision) to reveal the smooth wood underneath.

  • Creating a Keychain

Using the pliers and wire, Emil will create a simple keychain design. He can twist the wire into different shapes or even add small decorations using leftover bark or small twigs.

  • Artistic Touch

Emil can decorate his slingshot handle with carvings or paint (if available), expressing his creativity and personal style.

  • Math in Action

While cutting the branch, Emil can measure the length of the branch using a ruler or by comparing it to his hand. This will help him understand measurement and proportions.

  • History and Culture

Discuss the history of slingshots and how they were used in different cultures. Emil can learn about how people used simple tools in the past to survive and have fun.
