Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic principles of building a bridge using Legos and create their own unique bridge design. They will learn about balance, stability, and creativity through play.

Materials and Prep

  • Assorted Lego bricks in various shapes and sizes
  • Flat Lego baseplates for building
  • Space to build (a table or the floor)
  • Optional: A small toy car or figure to test the bridge

Before the lesson, ensure that the Lego pieces are clean and sorted for easy access. Familiarize yourself with basic bridge designs to guide the student if needed.

Activities

  • Bridge Exploration:

Start by showing pictures of different types of bridges (like a beam bridge or arch bridge). Discuss what makes them strong and how they help cars or people cross over water or roads.

  • Building Time:

Let the student choose a bridge design they want to create. They can use their imagination or follow a simple design. Encourage them to think about how to make it strong and stable.

  • Bridge Testing:

Once the bridge is built, use a small toy car or figure to test if it can hold weight. Ask the student to observe what happens and make changes if needed.

  • Bridge Show and Tell:

Have the student present their bridge. They can explain why they chose their design and what they learned about building it. This encourages communication and confidence.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a bridge strong?"
  • "Can you tell me what kind of bridge you want to build?"
  • "Let’s see if your bridge can hold this toy car! What do you think will happen?"
  • "What did you like most about building your bridge?"
