Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have improved their pencil grip, making it easier for them to hold and control the pencil while drawing or writing. They will also learn fun ways to practice this skill.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Paper
- Coloring book or printed coloring pages
- Small toys or objects for grip practice (optional)
- Wipeable surface for easy cleanup (like a whiteboard or laminated sheet)
Before the lesson, ensure the student is comfortable sitting at a table with enough space to move their arms freely. Make sure the pencil is the right size for their hand.
Activities
-
Pencil Hold Practice:
Guide the student to hold the pencil using the "tripod grip," where the pencil rests on the thumb and is held between the index and middle fingers. You can use a fun song or rhyme to make it memorable!
-
Drawing Shapes:
Have the student draw different shapes on the paper. Encourage them to focus on holding the pencil correctly while drawing circles, squares, and triangles. Celebrate their shapes with excitement!
-
Coloring Time:
Let the student color in a coloring book or printed pages. Remind them to keep their grip relaxed but firm. You can make it a game by seeing how many colors they can use in one picture!
-
Grip Games:
Using small toys or objects, create a game where they pick up items using the same grip as the pencil. This can help them strengthen their fingers and understand the grip better.
Talking Points
- "Look at how we hold the pencil! We want to be like a little bird holding a twig!"
- "Can you feel how strong your fingers are when you hold the pencil just right?"
- "Let’s make our shapes super fun! What shape do you want to draw first?"
- "When we color, we want to be gentle. Can you color softly like a whisper?"
