Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to solve basic math equations using addition and subtraction, and will understand how to apply these skills in fun, real-life scenarios.
Materials and Prep
- Math workbook with equations
- Pencil and eraser
- Timer (optional, for timed activities)
- Comfortable workspace
Make sure the math workbook has a variety of equations that include both addition and subtraction. Review the equations beforehand to ensure they are appropriate for the student's level.
Activities
-
Equation Relay:
Set a timer for 10 minutes. The student will race against the clock to complete as many equations as possible from the workbook. They can check their answers with you after each set!
-
Math Art:
Have the student create a colorful poster featuring their favorite equations. They can decorate it with drawings that represent the numbers or the operations.
-
Story Problems:
Ask the student to create their own story problems based on their life. For example, “If I have 5 apples and I eat 2, how many do I have left?” This will help them relate math to real situations.
Talking Points
- "Math is like a puzzle! Each equation is a little puzzle that we can solve together."
- "When we add, we are putting things together. When we subtract, we are taking things away. Can you think of something you add or take away in your day?"
- "If you get stuck on a problem, it's okay! Just take a deep breath and try to think of it in a different way."
- "Every time you solve an equation, you are getting better at math. It's like practicing for a sport!"
- "Can you think of a time when you used math outside of school? Maybe when you were baking or playing games?"
- "Let's celebrate every correct answer! Every time you solve a problem, give yourself a big cheer!"
- "Remember, it's not about being perfect. It's about trying your best and having fun with math!"
