Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different types of dinosaurs, understand basic dinosaur facts, and relate them to their environment. They will also practice counting and simple addition using dinosaur-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Space for movement (like a living room or backyard)
  • Imagination!

Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a comfortable space for the activities. Encourage the student to think creatively and use their imagination throughout the lesson.

Activities

  • Dinosaur Drawing: Have the student draw their favorite dinosaur. Ask them to think about what colors and features their dinosaur might have. Once done, they can share their drawing with you and describe their dinosaur.

  • Dinosaur Movement Game: Pretend to be different dinosaurs! Take turns moving like a T-Rex, a Triceratops, or a Velociraptor. Discuss how each dinosaur might have moved and what they might have done in their environment.

  • Dino Counting: Create a simple counting game by using fingers to represent dinosaurs. For example, hold up 3 fingers and say, "Look, I have 3 dinosaurs!" Then ask, "If I add 2 more, how many do I have?" Help them count and figure it out.

  • Dinosaur Habitat Exploration: Talk about where dinosaurs lived. Have the student imagine they are in a dinosaur habitat. Ask questions like, "What do you see? Are there trees? Water? Other dinosaurs?"

Talking Points

  • "Dinosaurs were amazing creatures that lived a long, long time ago! Can you name some dinosaurs?"
  • "Some dinosaurs were really big, like the Brachiosaurus! Can you stretch your arms up high like a big dinosaur?"
  • "Did you know that some dinosaurs were really fast? The Velociraptor could run super fast! Can you run fast like a Velociraptor?"
  • "Dinosaurs lived in different places. Some liked to live in forests, and some lived near water. What do you think your dinosaur liked?"
  • "Dinosaur eggs were very special! They were usually found in nests. Can you pretend to be a baby dinosaur hatching from an egg?"
