Objective
By the end of this lesson, Troy will be able to use Legos to understand basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and counting through fun and engaging activities that involve building and playing with Legos.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted Lego blocks
- Flat surface to build on
- Paper and pencil for recording results (optional)
Before the lesson, make sure Troy has a good variety of Lego pieces to work with. It’s helpful to have some larger blocks for easier counting and some smaller ones for more complex building.
Activities
-
Counting with Legos
Troy will count how many Lego blocks he has and group them in sets of 5. This will help him practice counting and grouping numbers.
-
Addition with Lego Towers
Troy will build two towers of Legos and then combine them to find out how many blocks he has in total. For example, if one tower has 3 blocks and the other has 2, he will learn that 3 + 2 = 5.
-
Subtraction with Lego Removal
Troy will start with a certain number of blocks and then remove some. He will then count how many blocks are left to understand subtraction. For instance, if he starts with 6 blocks and removes 2, he will see that 6 - 2 = 4.
-
Building Shapes
Troy will use Legos to create different shapes (like squares and rectangles) and then count the number of blocks used. This will help him understand geometry and spatial awareness.
Talking Points
- "Can you count how many Lego blocks you have? Let’s count together!"
- "If we have 3 blocks and we get 2 more, how many do we have now? Let’s stack them and see!"
- "If I take away 2 blocks from our tower of 6, how many do we have left? Let’s remove them and count!"
- "Look at this square we made! How many blocks did we use to make it? Let’s count the sides!"
- "What happens if we combine two different shapes? Can we count the total blocks in both?"
- "How many different ways can we build a tower with 5 blocks? Let’s find out together!"
