Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of taking care of their sense organs, specifically the eyes and ears. They will learn about how these organs work, common issues that can arise, and simple ways to keep them healthy.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for notes and drawings
  • Mirror for observing the eyes
  • Access to a quiet space for sound activities
  • Time to discuss and reflect on what they learn

Before the lesson, it's helpful to have some basic knowledge about the structure and function of the eyes and ears. Familiarity with simple terms like "vision," "hearing," "light," and "sound" will be beneficial.

Activities

  • Eye Observation:

Using a mirror, the student will look closely at their eyes. They can draw what they see, noting the color of their eyes and any interesting details like eyelashes or eyebrows. This activity helps them appreciate their eyes and understand how they work.

  • Sound Hunt:

The student will go on a 'sound hunt' around the house or yard. They will listen carefully to different sounds, like birds chirping, leaves rustling, or the sound of a car. Afterward, they can write down what they heard and how it made them feel.

  • Healthy Habits Discussion:

Engage in a discussion about the best ways to take care of eyes and ears. The student can brainstorm a list of habits, such as wearing sunglasses outside, not staring at screens for too long, and keeping the volume down on headphones.

Talking Points

  • "Our eyes help us see the world around us. What do you think would happen if we didn't take care of them?"
  • "Did you know your ears help you hear sounds? They also help keep your balance! Can you think of some sounds you love?"
  • "It's important to protect our eyes from bright sunlight. What do you think sunglasses do?"
  • "If we listen to music too loud, it can hurt our ears. How do you feel when you hear a loud noise?"
  • "Taking breaks from screens helps our eyes rest. What do you like to do when you take a break?"
  • "Keeping our ears clean is important, but we should be gentle. What do you think is the best way to clean our ears?"
  • "Eating healthy foods can help our sense organs stay strong. Can you name some foods that are good for our eyes and ears?"
  • "Regular check-ups with a doctor can help us stay healthy. Have you ever been to an eye or ear doctor?"
  • "Remember, our senses help us enjoy life! What is your favorite thing to see or hear?"
