Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic principles of measurement and ratios in baking while successfully creating a batch of delicious fairy cakes. The student will also practice their English skills by writing a recipe and reflecting on the baking process.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic baking ingredients: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, baking powder, and vanilla extract
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl and whisk
  • Oven and baking tray
  • Paper cupcake liners
  • Notebook and pen for writing

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are fresh and that the oven is preheated to the correct temperature. Familiarize the student with basic baking terms and techniques.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

The student will practice measuring each ingredient using cups and spoons. This will help them understand the importance of precision in baking and the concept of ratios when scaling recipes.

  • Writing the Recipe:

After measuring, the student will write down the recipe in their own words, including the steps they took and any variations they might consider for future baking sessions. This will enhance their writing skills and reinforce the learning process.

  • Baking and Observation:

The student will mix the ingredients and bake the fairy cakes. During the baking process, they will observe how the mixture changes and rises in the oven, discussing the scientific principles behind baking, such as how heat affects the ingredients.

  • Taste Testing and Reflection:

Once the cakes are baked and cooled, the student will taste their creations and reflect on the process. They can write about what they enjoyed, what they learned, and how they might improve next time.

Talking Points

  • "Baking is like a science experiment; you need to measure everything accurately to get the best results!"
  • "Did you know that the order in which you mix ingredients can affect the texture of your cakes?"
  • "When we bake, we're not just cooking; we're also learning about chemistry and how different ingredients interact with each other!"
  • "Why do you think we need baking powder in this recipe? It's a leavening agent that helps our cakes rise!"
  • "How does the temperature of the oven affect our baking? Too hot or too cold can change the outcome!"
  • "Let's talk about ratios: if we want to double the recipe, how much of each ingredient do we need?"
  • "Writing down your recipe helps you remember what you did and makes it easier to repeat your success!"
  • "What do you think makes a fairy cake different from other types of cakes?"
  • "Taste testing is important! What flavors do you notice in your cakes?"
  • "If you could add one more ingredient to this recipe, what would it be and why?"
  • "How can we improve our baking next time? Is there anything you would change?"
  • "Baking can be a fun way to express creativity; how do you want to decorate your fairy cakes?"
  • "Remember, mistakes are part of learning! What did you learn from any challenges today?"
  • "How can we turn this baking session into a fun family activity?"
  • "What other recipes do you want to try that involve similar skills?"
