Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the unfair treatment of Indigenous Americans throughout history, recognize their cultural significance, and express their thoughts creatively through art. The student will also learn about key events and figures in Indigenous history and the importance of respecting diverse cultures.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (for drawing and writing)
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Books or articles about Indigenous American history (if available)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if available)
  • Art supplies (optional: clay, fabric, etc. for creative projects)

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with some key events in Indigenous American history, such as the Trail of Tears, the impact of European colonization, and contemporary issues facing Indigenous communities. This will provide context for the activities.

Activities

  • Art Project: Create a Cultural Symbol

Students will choose an Indigenous culture they are interested in and create a piece of art representing a cultural symbol, such as a totem, dreamcatcher, or pottery design. They can research the meaning behind the symbol and present it to the teacher.

  • Timeline Creation

Students will create a timeline of significant events in Indigenous American history. They can include events like treaties, conflicts, and cultural milestones. This will help them visualize the impacts of unfair treatment over time.

  • Storytelling Session

Students will read or listen to a Native American story or legend, then retell it in their own words. They can discuss the moral of the story and how it reflects the culture's values and beliefs.

  • Discussion and Reflection

Students will engage in a discussion about what they learned regarding unfair treatment and how it affects Indigenous communities today. They can write a short reflection on how they think society can help address these issues.
