Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of pumpkins, including their life cycle, nutritional benefits, and fun uses. The student will engage in hands-on activities that enhance their learning experience and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 small pumpkin
  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A baking sheet (if making pumpkin seeds)
  • Optional: Ingredients for a simple pumpkin recipe (like pumpkin pie or roasted pumpkin seeds)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the basic life cycle of a pumpkin and some fun facts about pumpkins. Prepare any ingredients if you decide to cook with pumpkin.

Activities

  • Life Cycle of a Pumpkin:

    Draw and label the life cycle of a pumpkin on paper. Include stages such as seed, sprout, flower, and mature pumpkin. Use colored pencils to make it visually appealing.

  • Pumpkin Exploration:

    Examine the small pumpkin. Discuss its texture, color, and size. Cut it open (with adult supervision) to explore the seeds and pulp. Talk about what you see and feel!

  • Pumpkin Recipe:

    If you have the ingredients, follow a simple recipe to make roasted pumpkin seeds or a pumpkin dish. Measure the ingredients together and enjoy the tasty results!

  • Pumpkin Facts Research:

    Spend some time researching interesting facts about pumpkins online. Write down five fun facts that you didn’t know before!
