Objective
By the end of this lesson, Willow will be able to confidently add and subtract numbers up to 100, using various fun and engaging methods. She will understand the concepts of addition and subtraction and be able to apply them in real-life scenarios.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Timer (or a stopwatch)
- Colorful markers or crayons
- Calculator (optional, for checking answers)
Before the lesson, make sure to review basic addition and subtraction facts. Prepare some fun scenarios or stories to incorporate into the activities, making them relatable and enjoyable for Willow.
Activities
- Math Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around the house where Willow needs to find items and add or subtract their quantities. For example, "Find 3 books and 2 toys. How many items do you have in total?"
- Story Problems: Make up fun story problems that require addition and subtraction to solve. For instance, "If you have 10 apples and you give away 3, how many do you have left?"
- Math Relay Race: Set up a relay race where Willow has to solve an addition or subtraction problem at each station before moving to the next one. This can be timed for added excitement!
- Art with Numbers: Have Willow draw a picture that incorporates numbers. For example, she can draw a garden with 5 flowers and then add 3 more. After that, she can subtract 2 and show how many flowers are left.
Talking Points
- "Addition is like putting things together. If you have 2 apples and you get 3 more, how many apples do you have now?"
- "Subtraction is like taking things away. If you have 10 candies and you eat 4, how many candies do you have left?"
- "You can use real-life situations to practice math! How many cookies do we have if we bake 12 but eat 5?"
- "Remember, addition makes a bigger number, and subtraction makes a smaller number. It's like a seesaw!"
- "When you're adding, you can count on your fingers or use objects around you. It makes it easier!"
- "Check your answers! You can always use a calculator to see if you got it right after you solve it."
