Objective
By the end of this lesson, Willow will be able to confidently add and subtract whole numbers and decimals, understand the relationship between addition and subtraction, and apply these skills in real-life situations.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pencil
- Whiteboard or large sheet of paper
- Timer (optional)
- Fun math-themed stickers (optional)
Before the lesson, ensure that Willow understands the basic concepts of addition and subtraction. Review any previous knowledge she may have on these topics.
Activities
-
Math Relay Race: Set up a relay race where Willow has to solve addition and subtraction problems at different stations. Each station will have a problem to solve before moving on to the next one. Time her to see how quickly she can complete all the stations!
-
Shopping Spree: Create a pretend shopping list with prices for various items. Willow will practice adding and subtracting the prices as she "shops" for items on her list. This will help her understand how math is used in everyday life.
-
Math Art: Use the whiteboard or paper to create a colorful number line. Have Willow add and subtract numbers by jumping forward and backward on the number line. She can draw fun characters or objects at different points to make it more engaging!
Talking Points
- "Addition is like putting things together. If you have 3 apples and you get 2 more, how many do you have in total?"
- "Subtraction is like taking things away. If you have 5 cookies and you eat 2, how many are left?"
- "Do you see how addition and subtraction are related? If you know that 3 + 2 = 5, then you also know that 5 - 2 = 3!"
- "In real life, we use addition and subtraction all the time! Can you think of a situation where you might need to add or subtract?"
- "It's okay to make mistakes while learning! Each mistake is an opportunity to understand better and improve."
